Remedies – Staphysagria

Genus: Staphisagria

Common name: Delphinium staphisagria. Stavesacre. Larkspur.

Family: Ranunculaceae

Native to the Mediterranean mountainous regions, the poisonous Delphinium staphisagria plant bears lovely bluish purple flowers atop a hairy stem. The blossoms are spur shaped with five petal-like sepals and bloom in early spring. Its large leaves resemble those of a grape vine. The large wrinkled seeds have been used since antiquity for medicinal purposes to treat toothache, eye diseases, body lice, and dropsy, and also to promote hair growth. Delphinium staphisagria is botanically related to Aconitum. During the Middle Ages, Delphinium flowers symbolized the ideals of knighthood: courage, dedication, and chivalry.

The homeopathic remedy Staphysagria is used for physical ailments such as styes, cystitis, lacerations, surgical and dental incisions, and mosquito bites. If the underlying cause of the internal dis-ease is suppression of anger, unresolved indignation, humiliation, or grief, Staphysagria should be considered. Although anger is initially suppressed due to deep feelings of guilt or shame, there can be marked irritability and resentment accompanied by a sense of violation. This remedy can be helpful to those who have been bullied emotionally or physically, who have been in an abusive relationship, or who have been sexually assaulted. The person needing homeopathic Staphysagria is usually kind, sympathetic, gentle, well-controlled, self-disciplined, reliable, and trustworthy. But there can be an underlying sense of helplessness, frustration, impatience, or a fear of making people angry. These pent-up emotions may be released through sexual activity.
