Bach Flower Remedies – Gentian

Species: Gentiana amarella

Group: Uncertainty

Keywords: Discouragement or doubt

“In all things cheerfulness should be encouraged, and we should refuse to be oppressed by doubt and depression…”
~Edward Bach

This short biennial plant with tiny trumpet shaped purple flowers is found throughout northern Europe, Canada, and the northern and western parts of the United States. It grows in damp areas or along riverbanks in the mountains or in dry, sandy soil. Historically, the plant was used as a bitter tonic to aid digestion.

Dr. Bach wrote of Gentian, “Those who are easily discouraged. They may be progressing well in illness or in the affairs of their daily life, but any small delay or hindrance to progress causes doubt and soon disheartens them.” – The Twelve Healers

Emotional disharmony indicating Gentian:

  • Discouragement from setbacks
  • Doubtful of a good outcome
  • Depressed from difficulties

Positive character qualities of Gentian:

  • Conviction of a good outcome
  • Determination
  • Difficulties will be overcome

Daily use of the Bach flowers provides gentle emotional support. Negative attitudes are transformed into positive virtues as the body’s self-curative potential strengthens emotional health and restores inner harmony.

And may we ever have gratitude in hearts that the great Creator in all His glory has placed the herbs in the field for our healing. ~ Edward Bach
