Remedies – Silica

Common name: Silica. Silicon dioxide. Quartz. Silica sand. Clay. Flint.

Chemical formula: SiO2

Silicon, the second most abundant element on earth, is present in more than a quarter of the earth’s crust. When combined with oxygen, silica or silicon dioxide, is found in nature as quartz, sand, clay, and sandstone. Quartz or rock crystal is a hard crystalline mineral. Silicon gives strength to the stalks of plants which prevents bending and breaking of stems during heavy winds and rainstorms. When trees are petrified, the wood is replaced by silica. Diatomaceous earth consists of the silica shells of diatoms, microscopic algae which are found in earth’s water and soil. Small packets of silica gel beads are added to the packaging of many products to absorb moisture. In the human body, silica is an important trace element necessary for the health and maintenance of bone, connective tissue, teeth, skin, hair, and nails.

Homeopathic Silica, also named Silicea, is a major polycrest remedy and is useful for delicate children with poor stamina who suffer from repeated ear infections, colds, and tonsillitis. They may be obstinate and over-sensitive, but in time they usually become well-behaved, shy, and serious. Typical Silica adults are quite chilly with a poor metabolism that produces problems with hair, skin, nails, bones, and teeth. There can be a general lack of “grit,” courage, resolve, and confidence. Although they are usually yielding, quiet, and unassertive, they are intelligent and extremely conscientious, having strong internal convictions and fixed ideas. Silica is also useful for expelling splinters and other small foreign bodies from the skin.
