Remedies – Sabadilla

Genus: Schoenocaulon officinale

Common Name: Feathershank. Cevadilla. Veratrum sabadilla.

Family: Liliaceae

This flowering lily which is native to Mexico, Venezuela, and Guatemala produces a 3 to 4 foot stem of small showy flowers. When dried, its seeds resemble barley, but unlike edible barley seeds, Sabadilla seeds are poisonous and have been used as an insecticide for use on melons, citrus trees, potatoes, broccoli, and other crops. Powdered Sabadilla seeds have been used to kill head lice and intestinal worms. Sabadilla poison is toxic to honeybees and induces violent sneezing in mammals.

When prepared homeopathically, Sabadilla has an affinity to the mucus membranes, especially the nose. Thus its use is primarily for hay fever that is characterized by paroxysms of violent sneezing with watery eyes and a runny nose. Itching and tingling in the nose, along with copious watery nasal discharge, is common. Unlike over the counter allergy medication, the homeopathic remedy Sabadilla does not merely suppress the symptoms of allergies or hay fever. Instead, like all homeopathic remedies, Sabadilla stimulates the body’s self-healing mechanism without harmful side effects.
