Remedies – Lachesis Muta

Genus: Viperidae

Common name: Bushmaster snake

Family: Lachesis

Lachesis muta, which means “silent death” in Latin, is a venomous pit viper snake found in the tropical rainforests of South America. Adults can grow to be 6 – 12 feet long and weigh between 6 and 11 pounds. It is the largest venomous snake in the Americas. Unlike other pit vipers, the female bushmaster snake lays eggs instead of bearing live young. This poisonous snake may only eat 10 times in a year, patiently waiting to ambush its prey. Although a bushmaster snake has no rattle at the end of its tail, like its rattlesnake cousins, it will vigorously vibrate its tail when disturbed. Bushmaster venom affects the circulatory system, causing tissue damage and decreased coagulation of the blood. Its bite is often fatal.

Some of the most powerful homeopathic remedies are prepared from poisons, whether from plants or animals. Homeopathic Lachesis was initially made from bushmaster snake venom that Constantine Hering, a famous homeopathic, expressed in 1828 while visiting Dutch Guyana. A person needing Lachesis has an inner agitation that must be expressed and usually feels better after some kind of discharge. For example: women who struggle with PMS will feel much better once their period begins. If the release of strong emotions is suppressed, then the person may suffer significant physical symptoms. If physical symptoms are suppressed, then strong emotions including jealousy, sarcasm, and anger, may prevail. There can be a sensitivity to tightness around the throat. There may be bluish or purplish discolorations. The person is often extremely talkative or may have an overactive mind with racing thoughts. This remedy is useful for the acute conditions of menopausal hot flashes, painful left-sided sore throats, and throbbing violent headaches.
