Remedies – Hepar Sulphurus Calcareum

Common name: Hepar sulph. Calcium sulfide.

Chemical formula: CaS

Hahnemann prepared this chemical compound using the middle layer of oyster shells heated with flakes of yellow sulfur. Calcium sulfide has an odor like rotten eggs. It has a quality of luminescence and is used in the preparation of luminous paints. Pure calcium sulfide is used in electron emitters. Lime sulfur spray is used as an insecticide and fungicide. Calcium sulfide is present in the mineral oldhamite, in volcanoes, and is a component in some meteorites.

When prepared as the homeopathic remedy, Hepar sulph, the white powder of Calcium sulfide is dissolved in hot hydrochloric acid and triturated with milk sugar. Its use in homeopathy is for all types of inflammation which progress to suppuration, for example in boils and abscesses, painful ear, nose, and throat infections, and glandular swellings.
