Remedies – Cuprum Metallicum

Common name: Copper

Chemical formula: Cu

Copper is an orangish – red metal found in nature in its metallic form. It is classified in row 4, column 11 of the Periodic Table of Elements. During the Roman era, copper was mined from the island of Cyprus. The Latin name cuprum is a corrupted form of the word Cyprus. Due to its malleability, copper is an excellent conductor of heat and electricity. This native metal is widely used for wiring in electronics, roofing and plumbing. Copper has anti-microbial properties due to its ability to disrupt the electrical charge of microbes. The United State penny was originally made of pure copper from 1783 – 1837. Since 1982, pennies are 97.5% zinc thinly coated with copper. Copper is durable, waterproof, and resists weathering. However, when exposed to the air for a long period of time, a green protective coating called patina forms. A striking example of this is the iconic Statue of Liberty which stands in New York City Harbor.

As a homeopathic remedy, Cuprum metallicum has an affinity to the nerves, especially when there is a tendency to cramps, spasms, twitching, even convulsions in the various systems of the body. A person who could benefit from this remedy is often emotionally closed and suppresses every expression of emotions. As a result of this rigid inner tension, physical complaints such as asthma and colic, or neurological complaints like epilepsy, can develop. Despite a strong will, there can be an underlying want of self-confidence, a sense of not being good enough. As always, not every symptom will be expressed in one person.
