Remedies – Aconite

Genus: Aconitum napellus

Common name: Monkshood, Wolf’s Bane, or Granny’s Nightcap

Family: Ranunculaceae (Buttercup)

Native to moist mountainous areas of western and central Europe, this perennial plant grows over 3 feet high. It blooms in July and August with lovely deep bluish purple flowers that are shaped like a hood. Its tuberous roots contain the poison aconitine, a powerful neurotoxin that can cause death within two – six hours after ingestion. In the past, wolves were killed by arrows dipped in the plant’s poison, hence the name “wolfsbane.”

As a homeopathic remedy, Aconite napellus is useful for intense symptoms that come on suddenly after being exposed to a cold dry wind or getting chilled, or from shock or fright. When used at the start of a sudden illness, Aconite can often halt the progression of symptoms common to colds, earache, coughs, croup, fever, headaches, teething/toothache, cystitis, and other painful symptoms. Although this remedy is usually used for acute symptoms, it is also useful when the start of chronic problems can be traced back to a sudden shocking event that left a deep imprint or was not sufficiently resolved. Aconite can help remove past traumas.
