Remedies – Sulphur

Common name: Sulphur. Brimstone.

Chemical formula: S8

Sulphur is an element located in row 3, column 16 of the Periodic Table. In its native form, Sulphur occurs near hot springs and volcanoes. It is found in all three states of matter – solid, liquid, and gas, and it combines easily with other elements. In its solid state, it has a bright yellow crystalline structure. When combined with hydrogen, it has the characteristic rotten eggs odor. Sulphur is known as the “beauty mineral” because it is necessary for healthy hair, skin, and nails. In fact, the curliness of hair is determined by its amount of Sulphur. This element in its myriad of combined forms has been used since antiquity as a pesticide, fungicide, food preservative, fertilizer, and detergent. It has been used medicinally for a variety of skin conditions, including acne and dermatitis. Magnesium sulfate, also known as Epsom salts, is a familiar bath additive used to relieve aches and pains.

Homeopathic Sulphur is considered a polycrest remedy, a commonly used, well-proven remedy that has a broad range of applications for many symptoms. Polycrest remedies cover a variety of symptoms and are used for many different ailments. Many types of people benefit from this remedy when the characteristic symptoms match. No one will have all the keynotes of any remedy, and homeopathic Sulphur has so many symptom variations that a homeopath may be tempted to use it too much or even too little.

The common caricature of someone needing homeopathic Sulphur is a lazy man who is disheveled, unkempt, and smelly. He is adverse to bathing, his clothes are stained and holey, yet he is quite egotistical, detached, and condescending to others. Somewhat like an absent-minded professor or brilliant scientist or inventor who rambles on about his latest experiment or invention. And someone who would benefit from this remedy may indeed fit this stereotype. But the majority of people needing Sulphur are bright, curious, vital, creative, and enthusiastic folks. They enjoy being busy, they are responsible, generous and hospitable, and they tend to be hot.
