Remedies – Pulsatilla

Genus: Pulsatilla

Common name: Pasque flower. Wind flower. Prairie crocus. Meadow anemone.

Family: Ranunculaceae

Known as the Pasque flower because it blooms in the spring around Easter time, pretty purple petaled perennial Pulsatilla grows in dry grasslands and alpine meadows in the northern and central parts of Europe and North America. A single six petaled bell shaped flower blossoms from a 3 – 12 inch downy stem, revealing a whorl of yellow stamens that attract bees. Fluffy seed heads replace the flowers when they fade. The flowers are easily moved by the wind and its seeds are dispersed by the wind, thus the common name, “Wind flower.” Pulsatilla grows in clumps and has been used as folk medicine for eye inflammation, menstrual problems, coughs, and rheumatism.

As a homeopathic polycrest remedy, Pulsatilla is especially useful for many common ailments of women and children. It has an affinity to the hormonal and circulatory systems and can help with menstrual problems from puberty to menopause and for the pregnancy related problems of varicose veins, ineffectual labor pains, breech baby, and postpartum depression. Homeopathic Pulsatilla can be used for colds, coughs, conjunctivitis and cystitis. A person who could benefit from this remedy is often prone to weepiness due to a strong desire for affection and consolation. This is seen in a child who can be shy and clinging, who repeatedly asks if mommy loves him/her and who tearfully insists on sleeping in mommy’s bed.
