Remedies – Nux Moschata

Genus: Myristica

Common name: Nutmeg. Myristica fragrans

Family: Myristicaceae (Nutmeg)

Native to the small volcanic Banda Islands of Indonesia, the fruit of this tropical tree became the center of the lucrative nutmeg trade beginning in the 5th century and culminating in a monopoly by the Dutch East Indies Company during the 17th century. The dried seed of the fragrant nutmeg tree is the source of the spice nutmeg, one of the spices used in the popular fall spice blend that is used to make soups, beverages, breads, and desserts – pumpkin pie spice. The hard seed is wrapped in a fleshy crimson cover from which the spice mace is made. When ingested in large amounts, toxic effects of the spice nutmeg cause psychological and physiological changes including headache, nausea, mouth dryness, stupor, and hallucinations.

Homeopathic Nux moschata has a narrow range of use, but when the totality of symptoms fit, this remedy is necessary to restore balance to an overwhelmed Vital Force. It is useful to counter the effects of post-surgery when there is confusion and drowsiness. Overpowering sleepiness or narcolepsy is another indication for this remedy, which has an affinity to the nerves and sensory perception. An extremely dry mouth and tongue is an important keynote. When one is dry, drowsy and dizzy, a micro-dose sprinkle of homeopathic Nux moshchata is the spice needed to make everything nice again.
