Common name: Potassium bichromate. Potassium dichromate.
Chemical formula: K2Cr2O7
In nature, crystallized Potassium dichromate is a rare red mineral. Potassium dichromate is used in the manufacture of pyrotechnics, explosives, and safety matches. Fireworks ignite at a lower temperature because this chemical compound lowers the activation energy of the chemical reaction as the firework burns in a beautiful color display. Potassium dichromate is a toxic chemical when inhaled and is destructive to the mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract, including the nasal cavity and lungs. Other industrial uses include leather tanning, screen-printing, and as an ingredient in cement.
The homeopathic remedy Kali bichromicum is useful for sinusitis and certain types of colds. Nasal discharge is thick and green or yellow and may drip from the nose resembling candlesticks or form large boogers. Sticky crusts can form in the nostrils and if removed, the area will bleed, leaving a raw sore spot. Pressure is felt at the root of the nose. Postnasal drip may accumulate in the throat overnight and be difficult to hawk up. A croupy cough may develop due to the thick mucus and the voice may be hoarse. Consider this remedy for asthma that is worse between 1 and 2 am. A sinus headache or a migraine starting in one small spot can extend to the whole head. Generally, the person is chilly and worse from cold.
