Common name: Barium Carbonate. Witherite.
Chemical formula: BaCO3
Barium is an alkaline metal located in row 5, column 2 of the Periodic Table of Elements. Its atomic number is 56, and barium was determined to be an element in 1774. In its natural state, Barium carbonate is a heavy mineral that glows light blue under UV light. Like Argentum nitricum, its structure is an orthorhombic crystal, but it is usually twinned. Barium carbonica is a carbonate salt like Calcium carbonate. Like Arsenic, Barium carbonate is used as rat poison. It is also used in the manufacture of paper, as a glaze or colorant in ceramics, enamel, and paints, bricks and clay products.
As a homeopathic remedy, Baryta carbonica has an affinity for the mind, the heart, and the glands, especially the tonsils. In cases of tonsillitis, when the tonsils are so swollen that they touch, this remedy can be extremely helpful. It is also useful during childhood and during old age, those stages of life when an individual can be prone to irresolution and has an enormous lack of self-confidence. They may be fearful, display a bashful timidity, and be slow in physical and mental functioning. There may be senility, childish behavior, or mental handicap. Whether young or old, the Baryta carbonica body shape is characterized by emaciation with a large, distended abdomen.
