Remedies – Anhalonium

Genus: Lophophora

Common name: Peyote

Family: Cactaceae (Cactus)

In the scrubby Chihuahuan Desert of northern Mexico and in a small region of southern Texas, grows an endangered and unusual spineless cactus called peyote. This plant is known by the scientific names Lophophora williamsii and Anhalonium lewinii. This rounded cactus grows low to the ground in spreading clumps that are only a couple inches tall. Its pretty pink or white blossoms bloom sporadically and are followed by a pink fruit that contains tiny black seeds. The main alkaloid in peyote is mescaline, which is a hallucinogenic chemical. For over six thousand years, peyote “buttons” have been used by Native Americans for religious rituals and medicinal purposes.

As a homeopathic remedy, Anhalonium contains no material dose of mescaline. Instead the energetic properties of the plant are harnessed and used as a stimulus to the body to correct the energetic imbalance that is displayed by specific symptoms. This homeopathic remedy is not a “polycrest” remedy and is not frequently used. But like all homeopathic remedies, Anhalonium is only indicated for use when the symptoms fit the remedy picture. The primary and most peculiar symptom of this remedy is colorful “visions of most over-powering brilliancy, associated with moving shapes of fantastic design, the motion being regulated somewhat in time by music,” as stated in the proving of Anhalonium.
