Pondering Freedom

For over 200 years, Americans have celebrated Independence Day on July 4th. In 1776, the British colonies of North America began a war for freedom from the tyranny of British rule under King George III. Their goal was political freedom.

In 1783, the United States of America was recognized as an independent country. The Declaration of Independence proclaims the inherent rights of individual freedom and equality. The Constitution enshrines the inalienable human rights of freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, and the freedom to keep and bear arms, among others.

Webster’s 1828 dictionary defines freedom as “a state of exemption from the power or control of another; liberty; exemption from slavery, servitude or confinement.”

Political freedom is valued and has been fought for time and time again.

The goal of homeopathic treatment is physical, emotional, and mental freedom. In defining freedom in terms of health, the well-known contemporary Greek homeopath, George Vithoulkas, defines health as:

  • Freedom from pain in the physical body, having attained a state of well-being; 
  • Freedom from passion on the emotional level, having as a result a dynamic state of serenity and calm; and 
  • Freedom from selfishness in the mental sphere, having as a result total unification with Truth.” He adds a parameter that defines a measurement of health – creativity. “By creativity, I mean all those acts and functions which promote for the individual himself and for others their main goal in life: continuous and unconditional happiness. 

The ultimate freedom is spiritual freedom, an eternal freedom that is found only in liberation from sin and misery through faith in Jesus Christ. He paid the ultimate price of freedom by living a sinless life of perfect obedience and by bearing the just punishment that our sinful rebellion against our Creator requires.

Unlike political freedom which must be fought for and can be lost, and unlike physical, emotional, and mental freedom in health that is not always fully attainable, spiritual freedom is a gracious gift that is bestowed upon those who desperately realize their great need, sorrowfully repent and turn from their sin, and humbly ask God to be set free from their captivity to sin and shame.

“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23

“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” John 8:36

“For freedom Christ has set us free” Galatians 5:1

“Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”
2 Corinthians 3:17

“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.” Romans 8:1-2

If you have not yet been set free through faith in Jesus Christ, I urge you to call upon the name of the Lord today and receive the gift of spiritual freedom.

“And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Acts 2:21
