The human body is wonderfully complex and highly organized in its systems and structure. An estimated 37 trillion microscopic human cells form the body. There are around 200 different types of cells, each having its own specific task to carry out. In addition to these human cells, there are 10-100 trillion symbiotic microbial cells in the human microbiota. These non-human cells are mostly bacteria, viruses, and fungi that inhabit the gastrointestinal tract of each person, and their diversity is vital to the maintenance of health. Dynamic microbial communities are also found on the skin, the genitals, and in the oral cavities. Changes in these microbial communities affect the individual’s health. The differences between health and disease are reflected in the microbiome.
Our fearfully and wonderfully made bodies are designed to adjust to the innumerable influences that are encountered moment by moment. Although their dynamic activity is not fully understood, all cells work together to perform the myriad of functions that are necessary to maintain homeostasis, that internal state of balance when the body is functioning optimally, effortlessly communicating and making minute adjustments throughout its biochemical and physiological networks in response to external or internal changes. As long as our bodies are healthy, these innate internal processes carry on uninterrupted. Despite mental, emotional, or physical stress, body organs and systems continue to function to some extent. But deficiencies in necessary nutrients, lack of exercise or sleep, an excess of toxins, stress, or trauma disrupt homeostasis, and an extended state of imbalance and irregular function of the microbiome leads to symptoms of disease.
In the Organon, Samuel Hahnemann states in Aphorism 12 that, “It is the disease-tuned life force alone that brings forth diseases. These diseases are expressed by the disease manifestations perceptible to our senses conjointly with all internal alterations. These (internal and external) disease manifestations express the entire morbid mistunement of the inner dynamis and bring the entire disease to the light of day.” He further states in Aphorism 29 that, “Any disease (which is not strictly a surgical case) consists solely of a specific dynamic disease mistunement of our life force (life principle) in our feelings and functions.” In other words, when the body is mistuned or in a state of imbalance, when homeostasis is disrupted, the body itself produces symptoms of disease. And it is the body’s own self-healing mechanism that is triggered with the aid of an appropriate homeopathic remedy.
Bacteria, virus, fungi or other microorganisms which exist in the body naturally are not the cause of disease and do not produce symptoms. Rather, they are the results of disease and the body’s autoimmune system’s failed attempt to fully correct the imbalance. The signs and symptoms of disease are how the body expresses its need for help. Homeopathy can help reestablish health, after considering the individual’s totality of symptoms and the accompanying circumstances.
Hahnemann recognized that, “God, the sustainer of humanity, reveals His wisdom and goodness by openly setting forth for the medical-art practitioner what has to be taken away in the diseases that befall humanity here below, in order to annihilate them and so to establish health.” (Aphorism 17b) As the Author of life, God designed the body to produce symptoms that indicate the presence of dis-ease, and these symptoms also indicate the homeopathic remedy needed to stimulate the body’s self-healing abilities. Our bodies have a wonderful capacity for self-healing, and this ability is enhanced through the use of homeopathic remedies. When symptoms of disease resolve naturally, true healing has occurred.
The complexity and efficiency of the human body reflect the wisdom of the Creator’s design. We can never achieve perfect health in this life. Our bodies will continue to struggle with illness and dis-ease until we take our last breath, but God in His goodness has provided help for His creatures. As our wonderfully created bodies strive to maintain health moment by moment, ultimately the removal of disease and true healing comes from God.
