Remedies – Apis

Genus: Apis

Common Name: domestic honeybee

Family: Apidae

“Busy as a bee.” “She’s the queen bee.” “The birds and the bees.” You’ve probably heard these idioms before and know what they mean, even if you don’t know what the word idiom means. An idiom is a common expression that means something different to the literal meaning of the words. You’ve probably seen a busy bee before, flying from flower to flower and gathering pollen and nectar to carry back to the hive. Bees are social insects. They have a highly organized social system comprised of female worker bees, male drones, and the queen bee. Life in a bee hive revolves around the needs of the queen bee. Bees are essential for the pollination of many plants, and they make honey, which has many medicinal uses, including soothing burns, sore throats and coughs, and treating wounds. A bee sting, however, is a painful and sometimes dangerous experience.

The symptoms from a bee sting are well known. Swelling and redness, with stinging, burning pains of the affected part, these are the autonomic reactions that indicate the body’s response to a bee sting. Highly sensitive people may have an anaphylactic reaction with swelling of the airway passages, making it difficult to breathe, and a sudden drop in blood pressure. Accompanying symptoms may include a rapid, weak pulse; a skin rash, nausea and vomiting. Homeopathic Apis is made from honeybee poison and is useful for allergies, infection, anaphylaxis, and other inflammatory symptoms. Like the honeybee, a person needing the remedy Apis is active, restless and irritable. Jealous and protective of the family, this person is often the “queen bee” of the home, practical and task oriented.
